Advancing the Integration of Family Planning and Reproductive Health into Climate Change Policies and Programming in Uganda
Uganda Urged to Bridge Climate Change and Population Dynamics Gap in National Policies
Uganda has made significant strides in aligning its climate change response with global frameworks, but a recent by the USAID-funded Building Capacity for Integrated Family Planning/Reproductive Health and Population, Environment and Development Action (BUILD) project analysis highlights a critical gap in addressing population dynamics, family planning (FP), and reproductive health (RH) within its national climate policies.
The review of key climate change strategies reveals that while efforts focus on mitigation and adaptation, the integrated role of population factors, including youth engagement, remains underappreciated. This oversight risks hindering the country’s comprehensive approach to addressing climate change impacts.
BUILD stresses the importance of integrating population dynamics into climate change programming as a key component of Uganda’s socioeconomic development. BUILD calls for strengthened policy and institutional frameworks that encompass design, planning, budgeting, and monitoring processes, ensuring collaborative action across sectors. Adopting gender-sensitive approaches and establishing funding mechanisms could boost Uganda’s capacity to respond effectively to climate challenges while advancing reproductive health and development goals.
