Advancing the Integration of Family Planning and Reproductive Health into Climate Change Policies and Programming in the Philippines

Philippines can achieve more through integration of family planning, reproductive health in climate actions.

While the Philippines faces increasing climate change challenges, including rising temperatures and more frequent typhoons. there is however a lack of effective collaboration and coordination between stakeholders in climate change, population, and health, further impeding the efficient integration of these critical elements into climate change policies and plans. This is the result of policy analyses done by the USAID-funded Building Capacity for Integrated Family Planning/Reproductive Health and Population, Environment and Development Action (BUILD) project.

Although the country developed and implemented various policies, strategies, and plans to address climate change impacts and development issues, existing climate change-related national policies and plans in the Philippines lack explicit integration of population dynamics, FP/RH, youth, and gender, hindering comprehensive action.

Women and girls in the Philippines are disproportionately affected by the impacts of climate change, which compromises their access to family planning (FP) and reproductive health (RH) services.

To address these issues, cross-sectoral inclusive approaches are needed and systematic integration across policies, concrete budget allocations, and effective coordination among stakeholders across sectors.
