Advancing the Integration of Family Planning and Reproductive Health into Climate Change Policies and Programming in Côte d’Ivoire
Cote d’Ivoire government urged to integrate FP/RH in climate action
The USAID-funded Building Capacity for Integrated Family Planning/Reproductive Health and Population, Environment and Development Action (BUILD) project urges the government of Côte d’Ivoire to strengthen its commitment to integrating family planning and reproductive health (FP/RH), maternal and child health (MCH), and gender equity into national climate adaptation efforts.
Key recommendations from the BUILD project include enhancing cross-sector collaboration, investing in data and research, and ensuring sufficient funding and resources to mainstream these priorities. Policymakers are also called upon to engage local communities and establish robust monitoring systems to track progress.
Moreover, the coordination between key stakeholders—such as government ministries, civil society organizations (CSOs), and development partners—is critical to address the intersections between population dynamics, health, agriculture, environment, and climate action. The report emphasizes that Côte d’Ivoire must ensure evidence-based policies through a robust data management system and calls for strengthening the implementation of the National Gender and Climate Change Strategy, particularly focusing on women’s and youth’s economic empowerment.
The policy analyses suggest that advocacy efforts be made to enhance the capacity of policymakers, media, private sector, and community leaders to understand and promote the integration of FP/RH, youth, and gender issues into climate action. Opportunities such as the upcoming National Climate Change Adaptation Plan provide a platform for CSOs, youth groups, and development partners to push for these integrations in future policies and strategies.
