In 2015, member states of the United Nations—including Mali—committed to achieve the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) by 2030. Two of the SDGs are directly related to family planning and numerous others are impacted by family planning—evidence has shown that modern contraceptive use is linked to improved health outcomes, economic progress, educational attainment, and environmental protection. In Mali, HP+ used the FP-SDGs Model to quantify the benefits of accelerated contraceptive use to help make the case for increased domestic resources for family planning. The results show that if growth in modern contraceptive use is accelerated, progress toward achieving the SDGs would be dramatically boosted. This brief summarizes results and offers actions that stakeholders can consider to accelerate progress on family planning and the SDGs in Mali.

Several conservation organizations integrate health and family planning with conservation projects. This integration has multiple benefits. Often conservation practitioners recognize the potential value of integrated PHE (population-health-environment) projects, but need guidance on how to effectively incorporate P and H components into their project or on how to create a PHE project from scratch. This manual was created as a resource for these practitioners. It reviews not only the how, but also the why and what of PHE projects. The manual defines PHE as projects that integrate health and/or family planning with conservation activities, thereby seeking synergistic successes and greater conservation and human welfare outcomes than if they were implemented in single-sector approaches.

Experts in the family planning sector have developed a set of evidence-based practices—known as Family Planning High Impact Practices (HIPs)—that improve family planning and reproductive health program outcomes. HIPs can also be applied in development programs that integrate multiple sectors at the community level, including family planning. This policy brief explores the promising opportunity that exists to expand the use of HIPs within population, health, and environment (PHE) projects.

The Population, Health, and Environment (PHE) approach to community development aims to simultaneously improve access and equity to primary health care services, particularly family planning and reproductive health, while also helping communities conserve biodiversity, manage natural resources, and develop sustainable livelihoods. This course will introduce learners to the fundamentals of the PHE approach including PHE relationships, the benefits of integration, program considerations, the PHE policy and advocacy landscape, and how the PHE approach can contribute to global development priorities, such as the Sustainable Development Goals and Family Planning 2020 in an efficient and effective way.

This technical guide, intended for NGO members of the Madagascar PHE Network, suggests a variety of community-based actions that can be taken according to the needs and capabilities of each organisation. Concise yet rich in content, the guide includes an overview of key information relating COVID-19 and the pandemic response strategies of the PHE network. Then it offers a selection of actions relevant to all organisations, followed by more in-depth actions and guiding principles for PHE implementers. Actions include cross-training staff to mobilise communities, supporting positive behaviour change and social norms around preventative practices, and strengthening local community structures while seeking to mitigate potential impacts on livelihoods and ecosystems. The guide concludes with an encouragement to NGO members to track all of their initiatives relating to COVID-19 so that the network can capture the value of a holistic PHE approach in responding to this pandemic and share best practices as they emerge.
