The ENGAGE presentation, “HoPE-LVB,” aims to improve individuals’ understanding of the HoPE-LVB project (Health of People and the Environment in the Lake Victoria Basin) and the population, health, and environment (PHE) approach. This process includes mobilizing political commitment and resources to strengthen this and other PHE projects. The presentation is designed to promote policy dialogue on the relationship between population, health, and environment; and the challenges faced by communities in the Lake Victoria Basin. Target policy audiences include government policymakers, civic and religious leaders, health and environment sector leaders, program officials, advocates, journalists, and others.

Os pântanos de Rukiga estão sob crescentes pressões de uma crescente população humana que precisa de terras agrícolas. As zonas húmidas são vitais para os seres humanos (para segurança alimentar e hídrica e prevenção de inundações), e para a ave nacional do Uganda, a ameaçada Grou Coroado Cinzento (para habitat de nidificação). As pessoas que vivem ao redor das zonas úmidas entendem as conexões entre a saúde humana e ambiental e são defensoras apaixonadas dos grous. O Margaret Pyke Trust, o Rugarama Hospital e a International Crane Foundation, em parceria com o Endangered Wildlife Trust, estão trabalhando com as comunidades locais para capacitá-las a conservar as zonas úmidas, beneficiando não apenas sua própria saúde e bem-estar, mas também a saúde das zonas úmidas.
